Hi-Lo Farms & Mitchell County Vet Clinic
Hi-Lo Farms is a modest racing and breeding facility in Anson, just north of Abilene, Texas. The name of the farm is a reflection of the "highs" and the "lows"
surrounding the racing business. The 15-acre facility was originally established in the late 1960s as a Quarter Horse facility by Hassel Spraberry and his wife, Bonnie. In 1987, a switch to Thoroughbreds was made. Hi-Lo Farms lost its mainstay, Hassel, to cancer in February 2005. Things do go on. Bonnie, with the help of her children, Cathy, Christy and Larry will keep Hi-Lo Farms going on.
Hi-Lo Farms has weanlings, yearlings, producing mares, and two-and three-year-olds at the track. Missy Cherub, a Corwyn Bay (Ire) filly, was purchased in 1995. Missy won or placed in 22 of her starts. She is now a broodmare for Hi-Lo Farms and on April 1, 2001, she produced her first foal: Hi Teck Man. Hi Teck Man went on to win the Ruidoso Thoroughbred Futurity, the A.C. Kemp Handicap and the WinStar Derby. His win in the WinStar marked the biggest single payday for any Texas-bred in history. Hi-Teck Man is now standing at Mitchell County Vet Clinic.
Mitchell County Vet Clinic, owned and operated by Alfred Vardeman, DVM, is located in Colorado City, Texas. It is also the home of Commanchero, a son of Unbridled who is the sire of Grade 3 winner Most Feared and multiple stakes winner War Bridle.
